Concrete paving slabs
Concrete paving slabs are also known as ‘concrete slabs’ in the UK. The design of a concrete drive can be simple but also available in a wide variety of colours, textures and finishes.
”Standard concrete blocks are the most common material used for driveways because they are hardwearing, durable, low-maintenance”
Block paving is considered to be more attractive than basic, plain driveway. Block paving also is one of the most popular choices for driveways and path throughout the UK. The material comes in wide range of good quality products offering various designs and colours. Low maintenance in comparison to normal garden maintenance requirements. The price of block paving varies depending on the type of paver you choose, with a range of standard and premium varieties available
”A beautiful block paving driveway will enhance your home, and the benefits will last for many years.”
Tarmac is also known as Asphalt, provides a smooth, solid, durable surface. The cost of tarmac is relatively lower than other surfacing materials. Tarmac has traditionally been available in black, but it is now also available in several other colours, providing homeowners with more choice.
”Tarmac can be customised to suit your tastes, with different colour surfaces available, and you can also add a border to your drive to add an extra bit of individuality to the front of your property.”
Flagstone driveway makes a good alternative. It has a look that’s incomparable to driveways built of other materials. The natural stones fit together haphazardly, with joints carefully mortared in place. With control over the shapes and shades of stones used, you can create a pattern that’s pleasing to the eye while the stones themselves provide the strength to support vehicles.
”Whether your home is modern or traditional, natural stone block paving offers the ultimate paving solution for your driveway that will last a lifetime. A beautiful rich tapestry of natural stone with its varying hues and textures ensures your driveway will look unique.”
Planning permission for driveways
Most homes do not require planning permission for a new or replacement driveway of any size uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally. It is important not to build the driveway higher than the height of your damp proof course to prevent rising damp problems.
What about drainage problems?
There are several methods of dealing with drainage problems and various techniques and methods to deal with them from various open gullies, slotted drains, French drains and modern plastic drainage systems. Our surveyor will investigate drainage methods and choose the correct type for your installation.
”Failure to properly drain a pavement can cause all sorts of problems. Water on the surface encourages mosses, algae and other vegetation to colonise the paving; in icy conditions, even shallow puddles can become dangerous ice rinks, and over the longer term, standing water can actually damage the paving itself.”
Edgings come in various materials and many different designs and colours and can serve different purposes. The most common use of an edging is for soil or grass retention! A good quality decorative edging gives a neat appearance and a clean sharp finish to any surface.
With block paving the edge is an integral part of a path or drive giving the block integrity and strength; restraining outward thrust pressure, therefore avoiding movement of the block surface. It is well worth spending the extra money and making sure that you fit the correct edging kerbs.
”To achieve that perfect finish, we offer kerbs and edging to compliment any of the drives. Kerbs are adaptable for use in pathways, the construction of steps or in any paved area.”
